A SHORT NOTE TO SENIORS AND MEMORY

If you are over 50 you know that things aren’t what they used to be. There are many changes that occur as you get older. Many of the changes, are subtle and do not impact your day to day itinerary very much. Some of the changes gradually increase over time and make major differences in how you do things.

DAY TO DAY STUFF

One thing that gradually can get worse is your memory. I am not talking about Alzheimer’s disease which can be catastrophic for you and your family. I am talking about the smaller day to day stuff that at you used to take for grant it and did without any effort on your part.

Let me give you an example. I put a storage device away about a year ago for safekeeping. I looked in the obvious place for it and can’t find it. I will have to look over the entire house bit by bit to try and find it. The other day I was looking for my watch to put on my wrist. I usually keep it in a bowl in the living room. It became a habit for me putting it there after work. After looking there and several of places I looked down at my wrist. Low and behold it was right there on my wrist.

IS YOUR BRAIN LIKE Swiss cheese?

Sometimes I think that a synonym for my brain would be Swiss cheese. A thought goes in and comes right out. The thing is you have to learn to act quickly or you may not do what was on your mind. You have to learn to put things in the same place all the time. As soon as I come home my keys go on a hook right in the kitchen. That works pretty well. I can generally find my keys without much of a problem.

AREW YOU LOOKING FOR YOUR GLASSES

Now finding my glasses is another thing. Are they in the car, are they on the dresser? Who knows, are they in my pocket? Are they on my head? Now some of you may not be able to relate to that. Now don’t make fun of me, you will be there someday too.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Taking pills on a daily basis can be fun too. The proper way of taking daily medication is to take it approximately the same time every day. Well that doesn’t always happen. I don’t know why but sometimes I don’t remember until noon or one or two to take medication that I am supposed to take in the morning.

I am going to begin to keep a file on my computer that tells me where I put stuff. I know that that can be a problem as well. You then have to remember where you put the file on the computer if you don’t go there regularly! So they say that Life begins at 60! That’s great as long as you can remember your birthday!
