April is National Poetry Month
Poetry has been a source of information, narration, and inspiration for thousands of years. It is one of the oldest forms of communication and expression known to humankind. Almost everyone enjoys some form of poetry, whether it is serious or funny. With its richness in history, culture, and creativity, poetry focuses on every topic that one can imagine.
The Academy of American Poets dubbed April as National Poetry Month. This observance was initiated in 1996 in order to draw public attention to and appreciation for poetry and its place in society. The month of April was chosen so that a high percentage of people would be able to participate in the events inspired by this celebration. April is also springtime, when people are ready to get out and be active.
The goals of National Poetry Month are to focus on the wonderful contributions and achievements of American poets, familiarize more people with this art, make poetry more readily accessible to the public, promote it in the schools, and increase media attention. The Academy also strives to support the publication, distribution, and sales of poetry books as well as encourage the funding of poetry, poets, and poetry events. They provide lots of materials and resources to schools, libraries, and bookshops around the country. Additionally, they present author readings and poetry contests.
You are encouraged to explore the world of poetry and learn more about it. You are also encouraged to share poetry with others. The Academy of American poets has a wonderful web site where you can research poets and find thousands of poems for every occasion.
I just have two questions. Have you ever tried to read poetry? That can be an art in itself. What about writing poetry? Have you ever tried to write a poem? If I think that if you do your appreciation of the art will increase dramatically.
